What It Really Takes to Be a Full-Time Actor (And How to Stay in the Game)

A crossroads under an open sky, representing the pivotal choices and paths faced by a full-time actor.
Every full-time actor faces crossroads… moments where passion, persistence, and purpose are tested. Which path will you choose next in your creative journey?

Being a full-time actor isn’t just about talent or landing a big break, (even though it’s a great goal to have), it’s about building a lifestyle that supports your passion, day in and day out.

It takes resilience, strategy, and a mindset built for the long haul. While many dream of red carpets and call sheets, few talk about the emotional stamina and everyday effort it takes to not just get into the game, but to stay in it.

So what does it really take?

If you are already in the acting scene, then you already know it is a hustle like never before, but let’s break it down for the ones just getting started or who need a little motivation to keep going!

1. A Positive Mindset Is Non-Negotiable

A mysterious figure in a cloak appears invisible, revealing a hallway through their body, symbolizing the unseen inner journey and an open acting mindset of the unseen.
Having a positive mindset is everything. Like the invisible layers beneath a role, the acting mindset shapes how you show up, stay grounded, and move forward, even when no one’s watching. The real work happens within.

Acting is filled with rejection which can be extremely tough for creatives who givve their heart and soul in every audition. But you have to remember…

Rejection isn’t personal. It’s part of the process.

Not hearing back after auditions doesn’t mean you’re not good, it just means you weren’t their choice this time, and that’s ok!

I know, you wanted to book the part, but your perfect role is still waiting for you I promise. Keep working on your acting mindset and remember that this “rejection” you’re facing is just a part of the process.

A full-time actor understands this and learns to separate self-worth from the outcome. They know that they are enough and that opportunity was just meant for someone else!

Pro tip: Create a ritual for post-audition decompression. Celebrate the fact that you showed up fully, regardless of the outcome.

2. An Actor Career Means Consistent Training (Even When You’re Working)

A determined woman with a fierce expression holds a ruler over an open book, embodying a “do your homework” attitude—representing the discipline and focus required to build a successful actor career.
Want a thriving actor career? Then it’s time to do the work! That means training, mindset, marketing, and consistency. No shortcuts, no excuses. Your dream deserves your full commitment.

Just like athletes never stop training, actors shouldn’t either!

Shannon Scott makes a funny face at the camera while getting her hair curled, capturing the humor and resilience behind dealing with audition rejection in the acting world.
Audition rejection? Been there. And sometimes, all you can do is laugh, reset, and keep showing up. Not every “no” defines you…. but your mindset through it all absolutely does.

People often assume acting is easy… just memorize lines and show up, right?

But the truth is, it can take years (even decades) to master the emotional depth, technical precision, and presence required to truly own your craft.Whether it’s scene study, improv, voiceover, or on-camera work, consistent training isn’t optional, it’s really essential.

Not to chase perfection, but to stay ready for whatever opportunity comes next.

I’ve personally invested in countless classes and workshops over the years in acting, voice over, and performance capture. Right now, I’m training at The Acting Center – a positive, creatively charged environment that challenges me to grow as an actor with every session.

What makes it truly special is how it fosters a safe, supportive space where criticism takes a backseat and encouragement leads the way. I LOVE THAT!!!

Here, I’m free to have fun, make mistakes, and explore my craft without fear of judgment. That freedom to experiment and learn is essential for growth. Plus, connecting with like-minded artists who share the same passion creates a sense of community and motivation that’s simply priceless.

To me, a positive environment like this doesn’t just build skills, it helps performers truly thrive. It reminds us that acting isn’t about perfection but about courage, curiosity, and most importantly – connection.

Mindset shift: Training isn’t what you turn to when you’re struggling, it’s what you commit to so you can stay strong, sharp, and confident before the audition ever arrives.

3. An Entrepreneurial Spirit

Be happy and keep growing, always. Even when the industry is slow, keep your spirit high by surrounding yourself with good people who always support you!

Audition rejection? Oh, I’ve been there… more times than I can count (and we are still counting!)

And while it used to knock the wind out of me, I’ve learned that rejection is just part of the process… Sometimes, all you can do is laugh, reset, and remind yourself why you started in the first place.

Not every “no” defines your talent, your worth, or your future. What does define you is how you respond.

Your mindset, your consistency, and your ability to keep showing up with heart. Because in this industry, it’s not about avoiding rejection, but all about being unstoppable in the face of it.

Ask yourself: Are you waiting to be chosen, or are you always building and creating something?

4. A Good Acting Community Keeps You Going

A thumbs up in front of a background filled with positive words, symbolizing encouragement, connection, and the power of a supportive acting community.
A strong acting community can lift you up, keep you focused, and remind you that you’re never alone on this journey. Surround yourself with people who believe in your dream as much as you do.

The acting path can feel isolating if you try to do it all alone, and unfortunately you will come across some people who don’t have your best intentions at heart. This is why surrounding yourself with supportive creatives (actors, coaches, filmmakers) can make a massive difference in your acting journey.

The right community will remind you of your “why” when you forget. They will never belittle you or make you feel less-than. They will encourage you to keep going and help motivate you every step of the way.

Don’t follow the crowd, follow your heart and find an acting community that makes you feel like you can achieve anything together!

5. Multiple Streams of Creative Income

Creative income for actors goes beyond auditions and bookings. Diversifying your skills and revenue streams helps you build a sustainable career while doing what you love.

The positive side of an acting career is that there are many opportunities for creative income for actors beyond just auditions and bookings.

Voiceover work, commercial gigs, modeling, editing audio or video, and writing scripts or blogs, can all help sustain your lifestyle while keeping your creative spark alive. But sometimes, all of those avenues might not be available – meaning they can be just as hard to find as acting jobs themselves. I know, it’s a bummer…

When that happens though, you could find a job doing a job that helps you connect with people. The cool thing about this option is that it allows you to study their characteristics and behaviors for future auditions and roles!

My point is, be open to anything. You never know how it will help you in your acting journey besides helping you pay the bills.

Reminder: Diversifying your creative income doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it means you’re building a sustainable creative life.

6. Embracing the Long Game

If you’re in this for a quick win, you’ll burn out fast. And if you are in it for the long haul but don’t have a positive acting-mindset, you’ll also burn out fast!

So it’s important you find balance in everything you do. Find your community, know you are capable of greatness and every “no”, just means not right now. Celebrate progress over perfection, learn from every experience (good or bad), and be willing to evolve every chance you get!

Success in acting isn’t linear. Sometimes the “yes” comes years later than you expected, but it always comes to those who stay in the game. Take different roads and always remember that you DO have what it takes to be a full-time actor.

A Final Thought With Good Vibes:

If you’re feeling stuck, discouraged, or unsure about your next step, remember this: You are not alone. I’ve felt it. My friends in the industry have felt it. It’s completely natural to face moments of doubt and uncertainty… we’re only human after all.

But here’s the thing: just by showing up for your dream, you’re already doing the bravest work. Keep going. You are in the game, and that’s exactly where all the magic begins!
