So What’s The Big Deal With Mermaids in Film and Culture?
Mermaids in film and culture are endlessly fascinating. Although I’ve identified as a mermaid for as long as I can remember, it wasn’t until recently, while planning my upcoming Halloween Mermaid Retreat, that I truly dove into the rich history behind these mythical beings.
Let’s be honest: mermaids, selkies, and sirens have captivated us for centuries, but their stories run far deeper than sparkling tails and enchanting songs. The mermaid mythology surrounding these half-human, half-fish creatures is woven with folklore and legends from cultures all over the world, revealing mysterious and powerful forces lurking beneath the surface.
Here’s why I believe these mystical sea creatures continue to capture our imagination and glow brilliantly on screen:
1. Mermaids Started as Sea Warnings (Not Sweethearts)

Long before Disney gave us wide-eyed Ariel, mermaids were powerful and mysterious figures in folklore… not just cute love interests. In many cultures, they were ominous harbingers of danger or even deadly forces.
- Greek Sirens weren’t exactly mermaids but bird-women who lured sailors to their doom with enchanting songs. Over time, this idea merged with mermaid myths, creating a perfect mix of allure and threat.
- Selkies from Scottish and Irish legends were seal-people who could shed their skins to walk on land. They often symbolized transformation, loss, and longing.
- In some cultures, mermaids were considered guardians of the ocean, embodying the untamable and sometimes violent nature of the sea.
This wild and sometimes dark origin still ripples through how mermaids appear on screen. A beautiful blend of magic, mystery, and power that’s far more complex than the friendly, bubbly characters we often see today.
2. Hollywood’s First Mermaid Star Was Released in 1914
You might be thinking, “No way…. that long ago?” Trust me, I was just as surprised! The history of mermaids is mind-blowing, and we are just scratching the surface here…
Hollywood’s fascination with mermaids began over a century ago when Annette Kellerman, a trailblazing Australian swimmer and actress, starred in Neptune’s Daughter (1914), sporting one of the very first mermaid tails ever seen on screen. This film truly launched mermaids in pop culture history!
I haven’t had the chance to watch it yet, but I’m on the hunt for a copy. When I do, you’ll be the first to hear my thoughts! And if you’ve already seen it, I’d love to know what you think.
Since then, Hollywood has transformed mermaids into dreamy, dangerous, and utterly legendary figures, and many young girls longed to become a mermaid themselves.
From what I’ve discovered about this legendary movie is that:
- Annette’s graceful underwater movements and shimmering tail set the visual standard for every mermaid that followed.
- Mermaids instantly became cinematic icons. Sometimes enchanting romantics, sometimes mysterious and dangerous, but always captivating.
- Classic films like Splash (1984), one of my personal favorites, introduced mermaids as fish-out-of-water characters, delving into themes of human connection and identity.
- More recent movies like Aquamarine (2006) and countless retellings of The Little Mermaid continue to reimagine these creatures for new generations, blending fantasy with timeless themes of freedom, love, and self-discovery.
Mermaids remain timeless because they embody our enduring fascination with the unknown, especially the mysterious depths beneath the waves!

3. Pop Culture Mermaids = Empowerment Icons
Today’s mermaids have evolved far beyond myth and movie magic. They’re powerful symbols of freedom, fluidity, and self-expression.
- They celebrate being unapologetically yourself, embracing what makes you unique! Whether it’s your style, your spirit, or your story.
- The vibrant tails, the bold fashions, and underwater elegance show fierce femininity and strength. Mermaids embody a kind of wild grace that resonates with anyone feeling called to break free from societal expectations.
- Beyond just entertainment, mermaids have become part of queer culture, body positivity movements, and creative communities worldwide. All symbols that encourage embracing all kinds of identities and journeys.
That’s exactly the spirit we celebrate at our Halloween Mermaid Retreat – where magic, empowerment, and sisterhood come together beneath the waves! Because so many times we lose connection, self-love and confidence within ourselves, and I wanted to create something that left you feeling empowered while reigniting your creativity within!
4. Mermaids Tap Into Our Deep Connection to Water and Nature

Water is life, emotion, and mystery, and mermaids, as creatures of the sea, symbolize our deep, sometimes unconscious connection to those forces.
- In many stories, mermaids are gatekeepers between land and ocean, symbolizing the boundary between the known and the unknown, conscious and subconscious.
- Their dual nature (human and fish) mirrors the complexity inside all of us, blending logic and emotion, earth and water.
- This makes them endlessly compelling metaphors in storytelling and art, inviting us to explore themes of transformation, healing, and rebirth.
No wonder mermaids appear again and again… they’re a mirror to our own journeys!
5. Mermaids Are Visual and Cultural Chameleons
Mermaids aren’t locked into one form or story, they shift and change depending on the culture, era, and medium.
- From dark, cautionary tales to sweet romances.
- From classical sculptures and paintings to blockbuster CGI spectacles.
- From local folklore in coastal villages to international pop icons.
This flexibility lets every generation reinvent what a mermaid means to them while keeping the myth fresh and alive.
