Marketing is not something actors often think of when it comes to their business. In fact, actors often don’t even realize they are a business…

If you’ve ever said something like, “I’m an actor. I have an agent who finds me work,” it might be time for a wake-up call. Now don’t get me wrong, having an agent is a FANTASTIC asset, and they can certainly open doors for you. But relying solely on your agent to drive your career is a bit like waiting for someone to serve you a meal without putting in your order. If you want to truly take charge of your acting career, you’ve got to roll up your sleeves and learn how to market yourself.

You Are Your Own Business

At the end of the day, you are not just an actor—you’re a business. And like any business, you need to take ownership of your brand and reputation. If you’re not actively marketing yourself, you’re missing out on opportunities that could help you grow and get noticed.

Think about it: no one knows you better than you know yourself. You know your strengths, your unique qualities, and your passions. The way you communicate these to the world is what sets you apart from the thousands of other talented actors auditioning for the same roles. Marketing yourself effectively gives you the chance to shape how you’re perceived in the industry, build relationships, and make lasting connections that will help propel your career forward. This is the main reason I built Simply Shannon Entertainment, LLC. Because I knew that it didn’t matter how many agents I had or didn’t have,

A common misconception in the acting world is that marketing is something only “big” actors with millions of followers need to worry about. Trust me, I had this same thought for a long time. But the reality, is that this is far from the truth. In today’s industry, marketing is essential for actors at every level. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been in the game for years, taking a hands-on approach to your personal brand can make all the difference.

Yes, having an agent is amazing. They have the connections, the industry knowledge, and the expertise to get you in front of the right people. But even with an agent by your side, you can’t afford to sit back and relax. You have to remember that, you are a team. It’s not just about waiting for the next audition or role to land in your lap. You can (and should) be out there, hustling and building your presence on your own terms.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

While your agent can certainly find you opportunities, so can you. By actively marketing yourself, you’re creating more opportunities—not just for yourself, but for your agent, too. Think about it this way: the more you invest in your own personal brand, the more you’ll be able to collaborate with your agent in new and exciting ways. It’s not just about updating your headshot and getting an agent to ignite your career. The goal, is for you to become a partner in your own career—someone your agent can count on to push things forward from your side!

Here are a few ways you can start marketing yourself today:

  • Social Media Presence: Platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook are free and powerful tools for sharing your work, your process, and your personality. This is where you can control your narrative, showcase your acting range, and connect with fans, casting directors, and fellow creatives. You can share what you are working on, what you’re reading, or even some pictures of your pets for the fun of it. Everyone loves seeing animals!
  • Networking: In person networking events are fantastic, but so is digital networking. Engage with other actors, directors, and producers on social media, comment on their work, and build genuine connections.
  • Create Content: The rise of digital platforms means that actors no longer need to wait for traditional casting calls. Use your phone to create! Record monologues, skits, share behind-the-scenes glimpses of your life, or even create your own short films or podcast episodes. These not only showcase your talents but also demonstrate initiative. Keep creating, always.
  • Branding and Website: A simple website with your headshots, resume, and demo reel can go a long way in establishing your professional presence. It gives potential collaborators and casting agents an easy way to access your work and contact you. Don’t worry about all of the knitty gritty details about your website, just get something up that shows who you are and what you do as an entertainer.

That’s a Wrap!

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking marketing YOU as an actor is someone else’s job. Yes, your agent can help you find opportunities, but no one (I repeat, NO ONE) will be as invested in your success as you. You are your own business, and it’s up to you to promote, protect, and grow it.

So, if you’re still thinking, “I’m an actor. I have an agent,” let this be your reminder: it’s time to take charge. Marketing yourself doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and it doesn’t have to take a huge amount of time or money. Small, consistent efforts can have a massive impact on your career in the long run.

Remember, teamwork makes the dream work. And that dream starts with YOU!
