Motion capture is like stepping into a playground where acting meets technology, and trust me… it’s way more fun than it sounds, and it only seems to get better with every project you do. I wrapped from a project this week, and from my perspective as a performer in the volume, every session challenges you to step into a different world, body and mind like never before.
Over the years, I’ve noticed a few breakthroughs that have completely changed the way actors like myself work in mo-cap. Some I’ve experienced firsthand, others I’m still dying to try – like underwater motion capture. If you know my underwater background, you know this is right up my alley!

1: The Volume: More Than Just Shiny Dots
Walking onto a volume stage for the first time feels like stepping into a sci-fi set that’s alive. It’s exciting. The bright lights and technology captures every area of the stage, and you are instantly transported to wherever the script takes you as a mo-cap performer. You are surrounded by a digital world that reacts with your movements in real time.
For me, it’s like entering a dream. As a theatre kid, I have always been “larger than life”, and it’s here where I can be free to play and explore like never before. You can experiment with your physicality and become the character that traditional film rarely allows. The volume allows you to transform your performance into something fully alive and ready for VFX character work.
So what’s the first lesson here? Immerse yourself. Be willing to experiment and let go to become creatures or animals (if the script calls for it). You’re not just wearing shiny dots, and the volume isn’t just a stage… it’s your playground for a wild VFX character performance! It’s your moment to play like you did when you were a kid.
2: Real-Time Feedback: The Digital Mirror
One of my favorite breakthroughs is real-time feedback. Imagine performing a scene and seeing your digital character moving perfectly in sync with you. Every flick of a wrist, skip, jump and hop. It’s like a magical mirror that tells all.
For actors, this is huge. You can instantly tweak gestures and experiment with your movement. I sometimes catch myself thinking, “Wait, did that really read that way?” and then adjust on the spot based on what I might see, and more importantly from the director’s adjustments. It turns every session into a playful mix of discovery and craft!
Also on a side note. Make sure you’re ready both physically and mentally before your shoot. Because the days can be long and demanding, and you have to be ready for it. If not, I promise you’re gonna feel it the next day!

3: Facial Capture: Tiny Details, Big Impact
In mo-cap, even the tiniest human detail can still create big magic. Facial capture has evolved to capture even the tiniest expressions: eyebrow twitches, micro-smiles, subtle frowns. As a mo-cap actor, this means every micro-emotion counts.
Even if the audience never sees my actual face, these expressions give life to digital characters. It’s almost like magical tiny human details translated into a world of digital possibilities.
A performance capture actor knows this to be true, but what’s really amazing is how these micro-expressions can completely transform a character’s personality on screen. It’s the little gestures – a twitch, a glance, or a subtle smile that make a digital character feel alive, relatable, and unforgettable.
Another tip for you: even if you don’t have facial capture, try to memorize the lines anyway. It’s helps if your body has the words to react to before the audio playback begins.
4: Underwater Motion Capture: My Dream Frontier
Here’s the part where I get really excited: underwater motion capture. I haven’t done it yet, but my background in underwater performance makes me itch to dive in (literally).
I can only imagine being able to perform a digital character that moves fluidly like it’s underwater. Your body, your buoyancy, your gestures are captured in real time, and the animators get a perfectly natural, gravity-defying performance. Mermaid characters, aquatic creatures, fantastical sequences… the possibilities are endless.
I believe this is my “next big adventure” in motion capture someday, and I can’t wait to explore how underwater physics can translate into digital acting. For performers with aquatic skills, becoming an underwater mocap actor is a dream!

5: Collaboration Between Actor and Animator: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Mo-cap is the ultimate team sport. Your performance is only part of the magic and the animators bring your work to life. These days, actors often collaborate directly with animators to refine gestures, timing, and expressions.
Speaking their language is a skill in itself. I am continually learning how to exaggerate or refine a motion so it reads beautifully in a digital world. For me, this is one of the most fun parts of mo-cap: learning to speak “digital actor” and co-create a character with the team.
6: Full-Body Performance: Your Suit Is Just the Beginning
Like I said before: motion capture isn’t just about dots on a suit… it’s about your body awareness. Dance, martial arts, even underwater movement can elevate your performance. So get out there and get moving, because when you do book that mocap job, you want to be an animation-ready motion capture performer!
Every motion has to be intentional because small mistakes read exaggerated or off in a digital space. For actors, this means training like an athlete and thinking like a dancer. The suit helps, but your craft is what makes the performance truly believable.
Jump-In & Go All-In
Motion capture is a performer’s playground, blending art, tech, and imagination. From real-time feedback to facial capture, from collaborating with animators to someday exploring underwater motion capture, it’s a field that’s constantly evolving and full of opportunities to experiment.
The biggest takeaway? Your creativity, focus, and physicality are central to every digital performance. The technology amplifies your work, but it’s your imagination and skill that bring characters to life! So JUMP IN and go all-in, because if you have the chance to step into the volume, you won’t want to miss your opportunity to make something truly magical!
